#2 Human value and technology probe
This project about the community garden is based on a smart city which is an urban area that uses different types of electronic data collection sensors to supply information used to manage assets and resources efficiently. Therefore, we hope that our concept would be sustainable and efficiency assistance within the context of a community garden.
EZ-Worm is essentially re-creating and simplifying the process and use of a worm farm whilst keeping it low maintenance. The process is easy: Users only need to throw the food scraps into the container, and then the worms would eat the scraps. The liquid would become the fertilizer after passing the filter. Here is the sketch of our concept:
The original idea is from our personal experience in house garden, we want to build an installation that can automatically fertilize so that the people’s hands will not be dirty. After interviewing three target audience, we find that most people enjoying gardening and they do not mind dusting the dirt. During the development, we pay more attention to the simplify the use process. We want to create a connected community between citizens.
In total, we use three sensors to detect the distance, temperature and light separately. As it is necessary for users to know whether the container is full or not and the worm would die if the container is too hot, we need to collect the data about the capacity and the temperature of the container, while for the light sensor, it is set for the developer since we just want to collect the data about how many times that users use it. All the data will be sent to the database from which the output device, a tablet that is installed in the kitchen, get the data.
