Google I/O 2021 takes place from18–20 May. They’ve had some great announcements across their many products/offerings including Android, AR, Cloud, Gaming, ML & AI, Web & Mobile, and Open Source to name a few. Google I/O also offered Learning Labs, AMAs, Community Lounge and the very cool I/O Adventure — the Virtual I/O experience.

Even at a Virtual Conference, I find myself near the Barbecue (a literal Firebase).

As a Firebase CMS, our focus was mainly on the Firebase announcements and there were some pretty cool ones (although I suspect they may have been holding back a couple to announce at Firebase Summit later this year ;-P).

Here is a quick Rundown of the announcements. You can find a link to the Keynote, as well as the link to the official Firebase blog announcement at the end of this article for more information.

Let’s get into it.

Kicking things off, it was announced that Firebase are now used by over 3 million apps every month. Just 6 months ago at Firebase Summit, that number was 2.5 million apps including some pretty big enterprises and other well known entities like The New York Times, The Economist, Lyft, hotstar and more.

It’s really awesome to see the growth in adoption, and similarly the grow of the Firebase ecosystem’s offering as seen by these announcements at I/O.

Rapid Iterations with Firebase Emulator Suite now including Firebase Storage Emulator.

Added support for Android App Bundles in Firebase App Distribution.

Expanded Firebase Extensions

In the past couple of month, we’ve seen an increase conversations around Firebase Extensions. This is immensely exciting as this will allow Firebase customers the ability to add additional functionality to their apps that much faster. The expanded Firebase Extensions announced include:

  • Algolia Search on Firestore
  • MailChimp to send personalized emails
  • MessageBird to communicate with your users
  • Perspective API from Jigsaw to analyze user generated content

Crashlytics enhancements:

  • New custom keys search and filtering capabilities.
  • Improved Games support for Crashlytics: increased visibility into a crash’s root cause, superior grouping of Unity crashes, surfacing enhanced device metadata for Unity apps

Firebase Performance Monitoring enhancements:

  • Processes performance data in real time
  • New traces table to sort, search, and identify biggest performance changes

Remote Config updates to better visualize and optimize app configuration:

  • A redesigned Remote Config console to highlight vital information and give you more flexibility
  • An updated publish flow
  • An overhauled Remote Config A/B test results page
  • Coming Soon: Personalization — a new Remote Config feature that leverages the power of ML to automatically optimize an individual user experience
