Flash Fiction Challenge #5 inspired by: Peanut Butter, Newspaper, Eiffel Tower.

It struck him like a slap as he sunk his teeth into the slab of turkish bread toast smothered in peanut butter. Melted cholesterol-lowering butter-flavoured spread dripped down his arm.

The “Paris look” was so 2010. Now, the faux lime-washed walls covered in posters of artists in Montmartre laneways made him feel like he was eating in a bad cafe. The spider-in-residence inside the wire Eiffel Tower sitting in the middle of the dining table winked at him and then returned to its industrious cobwebbing.

The headline screamed from the open newspaper.

“Simple White Modernism for 2015.” He couldn’t read it.

The Provincale-look panel on the dishwasher door rattled just a little as he flicked it shut.

There was a choice to make. Redecorate or . . .

The Eiffel Tower copped a blizzard of insect spray, and he left for work.

But he left his beret behind.
