Having an extremely intelligent computer installed in the vehicle that can provide even the most minute detail about it — you can view data such as the vehicle’s speed, fuel usage, tire pressure, location, idling time, seat belt usage, battery voltage, and much more. Having access to this information provides a way to efficiently monitoring your vehicles using GPS fleet tracking, also known as Telematics.

Telematics is an automotive technology that is used for monitoring trucks, cars, equipment, and other such vehicles with Global Positioning System (GPS) technology and On-Board Diagnostics (OBD). It works as an essential fleet management tool for several commercial and non-commercial companies. The word ‘Telematics’ is a combination of ‘tele’ — meaning remote communication, and ‘informatics’ — which means the usage of information processing. Thus, Telematics literally means transmitting data over long distances.

This system is most commonly used for managing a fleet of vehicles remotely and getting an overview on each of the vehicles. The data from each vehicle is recorded on a Black Box, a small device that is plugged into the OBD or the CAN-BUS port. It is then transmitted via a cellular network to enable communication on a fleet management software application or website. This is done using a SIM card and modem that is attached to the Black Box.

A Telematics device has many key components such as an Input/output interface, GPS receiver, SIM card, engine interface, accelerometer, and buzzer. These elements allow it to gather pertinent data such as driver behaviour, engine diagnostics, vehicle location, and vehicle activity. Companies can gain insight into this information and get easy-to-understand visualisations on the fleet management software. It can be then used for optimising operations and managing resources better.

When using fleet management software, you can view and analyze reports to gather business intelligence. Additionally, data analytics and machine learning provide companies with the right tools for better fleet optimization, productivity, compliance, sustainability, and integration.
