The Skills You Have To Have To Get The Job
Here’s your checklist for 5 skills you need to master if you’re going to score that remote job.
1. Organized As A Motherf$#@!er
As in other jobs, you’ll be given tools to help you do your job, like being included in relevant Trello boards or Slack channels, etc. But your job will be to deliver certain results, so it’ll be up to you how you manage your time and resources to get those results.
Your job is to deliver results, not to punch in at 9:00.
You won’t have anyone standing over your shoulder telling you how long a task should take, or even what order to do them in. So you will need to learn to time-block your own calendar, and make a work-flow that gets the job done!
2. Tech Savvy (“Millennial Style”)
Loving being in front of your computer is a definite requirement because you’ll be glued to it 90% of the time. You have to be completely comfortable having video conference calls with your teammates, doing video presentations for your clients/customers, using tools like Slack effectively (e-mail is soooo 2010). Not only that, you’ll probably have to
be your own “tech support”
in most cases, but don’t worry, I’ll let you in on a secret here: Tech Support means you 1. Google the problem. 2. Follow the suggested steps in the search results until you find a “solution” that works.
3. Awesome Communicator
Us crazy millennials prefer to send a “☕️👯?” than to call and ask if you’d like to go for a break together. Is that good communication? It’s certainly efficient, but when you’re trying to pitch your team on a new idea you have, emojis probably won’t be enough to hit the ball home. Communicating effectively is a skill many of us have to learn and practice.
Master getting the message across in a way that makes people: hear you, feel good and like their time was used.
Yes, hour long meetings that could have been communicated in a 2 sentence blast e-mail are definitely a thing of the past now (I hope), but, getting your team (that’s scattered across different time zones) to understand and support what you’re pitching them can be more difficult in video chats or IMs.
4. Play The Same Games
Just like any company offering an office job position, your remote job company has a culture! It’s probably related to the industry, but maybe also the team you’re joining all has dogs, or maybe they all are health nuts. There’s something they all connect over, so find out what it is to know if you’ll easily become a part of the team.
Google the company. Google the team. Heck, even google their pets!
Check the team’s social media pages (Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, etc)., and see if your own pages are singing the same tune. After all, it’s 2017, so you better believe they’ll be Googling you before they consider you.
5. Independent & Trustworthy
Working remote means there’s no one there to see what time you came into the office, what you’re wearing, or even if you’re typing with one hand because the other is in a box of cookies. For that reason, employers hiring for remote positions are picking candidates that are “built” for remote work.
You are built for remote work: You’re a hungry wolf.
That may mean you love being a productive and effective hermit in your home office, or maybe you stick to a schedule of showing up to a co-working space every day at the same time. Whatever your flow is, you need to show that you will get the job done. Remember: remote means they don’t care how or where you’ll get the job done, just that you always will!
