Today I wanted to review Oculus (2013), a movie I think it should get more praise than it does.

Plot

Oculus follows two siblings, Kaylie and Tim. We open with Tim getting out of a mental hospital he’s been in since they were kids and their parents died. The papers got one story but the kids know something more sinister led to the destruction of their family than a loving husband turned abusive killer. A decade later, Kaylie and Tim set out to prove their father’s innocence and put a stop to the corrupting Oculus mirror.

If this sounds like you’d enjoy watching it, check it out before I get into spoilers. Even though the ending is predictable it’s still really satisfying. I’d argue it’s not about the ending at all, the movie really shines through its flashback narrative, so that’s what I’ll start talking about.

The Oculus

As adults, Kaylie and Tim bring the haunted Oculus that ruined their family to their old house and attempt to document its ways of corruption. As they get deeper into their time with the mirror, it grows stronger and affects them differently, and as this happens the movie cuts back to scenes from when they were children.
