Rainway fixes League of Legends on Virtual Machines

Riot-Games new anti-cheat technology comes with an unfortunate side affect. It prevents users on virtual machines from playing League of Legends. Rainway looked into the matter and found a fix that will allow Linux Gamers to continue enjoying League of Legends.

The Problem

League of Legends is one of the most popular free-to-play Games in the world. It has consistently dominats the top lists on YouTube and Twitch. With popularity comes hackers and cheaters. The result is that Riot-Games has to take an aggressive approach to keep the Community safe. Normally their anti-cheat technology is very non-intrusive and isn’t noticed by legitimate players.

League of Legends recent 8.12 patch corrects a few vulnerabilities in the system, but also comes with an unexpected side affect. It prevents virtual machines from being able to load the game at all. This completely shuts down the Linux Community that relies on VM’s to play the game. It also affects Cloud Gamers that are using a VM to stream League of Legends to another system.

The Fix

Rainway is a Game Streaming App that allows you to stream Video Games from one system to another. With their recent Octane Update, they added support for Cloud Gaming. When this problem was brought to their attention, they wanted to be part of the fix.

If you’re part of the VM Gaming Community, you’re in luck! Rainway found a solution and they shared it through their blog. Here’s a quote that talks about what’s involved:

“We looked into it and have found a temporary work around so you can get back to playing.

For KVM, add -hypervisor or hypervisor=off to your -cpu line, an example of which looks like.

-cpu host,-hypervisor,kvm=off,hv_spinlocks=0x1fff,hv_relaxed,hv_vapic,hv_time

And if you happen to be using libvirt, adding the following stanza inside <cpu> should work as well.

<feature policy='disable' name='hypervisor'/>

So why does this work? This new anti-cheat is simply checking the CPUID and doesn’t seem to be doing and heavy lifting behind the scenes. Hopefully this gets you back into the game.” -Rainway Blog
