Flipboard is a visual magazine that aggregates content from the web. That said, there are a multitude of benefits besides reading and curation. The platform is ideal for marketing your business, showcasing your work, and making long-lasting connections. In this article, I share tips on Flipboard for creative professionals. These suggestions also apply to all forms of curation.

How Can Flipboard Benefit Me as a Creative Professional?

You need a space to feature your work as a creative professional. One that will help you showcase your masterpieces. Flipboard’s visual appeal comes in handy to curate a portable exhibition and share away or keep up with industry news, this is your space.

Here Are Some Key Benefits:

Showcase Your Portfolio

Your portfolio is your calling card. Curate your best work into a Flipboard magazine. Impress your viewers with a magazine-style presentation. Make browsing through your collections an easy and pleasurable experience for your readers.

Unlike a website, Flipboard can organize your work in different magazine categories. You can have a Flipboard magazine for landscapes, portraits, or abstracts. Then you can feature your magazines on your website or send a magazine in your email newsletter. See my example below.

Pro Tip: Build a virtual exhibition with your work. For example, curate a magazine with your latest and greatest and share it around. Your followers can see your beautiful pictures on their phones or iPads. It will surely save you the expense of a live exhibition. The magazine is portable so you can take it to galleries or send it to your rep.

Tell Your Story

It’s a challenge for any artist to be found amidst a sea of people and galleries. A Flipboard magazine allows you to control your artistic narrative. Trading ideas and inspiration in an artistic environment enhances creativity flow. Curation by professionals in your industry helps discover new styles, techniques, and ideas. All this activity contributes to your creative growth and staying current.

Curate not only your work but also others’ stories. Choose specific themes, projects, or events. Try something like sports photography for a specific event like a championship or a travel photo journal in an exotic country. You can build a compelling narrative about your artistic journey. Your audience will love it!

Make Use of Your Magazine Cover

Your magazine cover is the entrance to your exhibition. Showcase your recent work and share it with the world in this nurturing space.

A thumbnail of your cover appears on your social media channels when you share a Flipboard link. Use this opportunity to put your best foot forward and promote your best work on a magazine cover.

I can never emphasize enough the value of a good magazine cover. As a creative pro, you have the power to attract any visitor with a knock-out cover image.

Pro Tip: I take my pictures or draw something fun and I add it to my covers. My work pops up here and there on a few magazine covers. I also change the images to keep the magazine fresh. This way I can also showcase new work.

Here are a few sage words from Leica Photojournalist Salvo Micciché who has been a user for many years.

“Flipboard allows me to create some specific magazines on various topics, particularly photography. This was useful and helpful for my readers and my customers. I have a magazine dedicated to the world of photography and others dedicated to my photography in general. I also curate thematic topics, projects, and storyboards. I make it easy for people to view photographs on specific themes without getting lost in heterogeneous things. It’s not always easy to do this on other social networks.”

Be in the Know

Always stay informed. Flipboard is the place to follow magazines and topics related to creative inspiration. Curate special news feeds to stay updated on industry trends, techniques, and creative work.

If you are a visual artist, like me, follow all art topics. I get tons of inspiration from art and photography magazines. It’s very easy to access Flipboard on the go via mobile.

Pro Tip: I curate just for art inspiration. I keep the magazines private so I can refer to them when I run “dry” (when my mind draws a blank). It’s very helpful for ideas or simply to enjoy other people’s work.

Networking and Collaboration Are Key

I can’t begin to tell you how many awesome people I have met in the last 12 years, and I have Flipboard to thank for this. Through these connections, I was able to build a membership group, buy a camera, travel the world, and eat vegan.

Shall I continue?

Many of these connections are creatives and they are truly inspiring. So… I can’t stress it enough, connect with other creative professionals on Flipboard. Follow their magazines, comment on their work, and collaborate on projects. Networking might lead to valuable opportunities and exposure within the creative community.

In Conclusion

Curate + Flip + Engage + Share = Not rocket science (just a little time). All this is worth it if you want to get benefits as a creative on Flipboard. And, don’t forget to rinse and repeat.
