While browsing through Flipboard, I discovered your magazine. The content appealed to me, so I flipped through several more articles and then I explored your website.

I kept on clicking around and found myself back on Flipboard.

I didn’t catch the name of your blog — I was too engrossed in your articles. How can I find my way back to your blog?

It’s So Obvious, but NO, It’s Not. Where’s Your CTA — the “Call to Action?”

A little-known fact: Flipboard doubles up as your blog. It’s not a blog per se. But on Flipboard, we read it as a publication. After all, a magazine is a publication.

Like any publication, you need to add a Call to Action. It’s essential! Your readers expect something of you as the curator. If they like your content, they want more. If they like you, they want to follow. Make it easy for them.

In this article, I will share how to use Call To Action on Flipboard so that you don’t disrupt your readers.

Why Do I Need a Call To Action?

You want your audience to take action when they land on your profile.

  1. To increase engagement, invite readers to follow you and share your content.
  2. Drive traffic by sending your audience to your website where they can learn more about you.
  3. Encourage actions like following your magazines to build readership/
  4. If your goal is to gain subscribers or sell products, a well-crafted CTA may lead to higher conversion rates.
  5. A CTA provides clear direction to your readers by letting them know what steps you want them to take.
  6. A CTA makes your profile more interactive by giving visitors a reason to engage with your content.
  7. CTA should be both visible on your website and your Flipboard profile.
  8. Don’t forget your federated account. A CTA belongs there as well.
Anatomy Of A CTA Placement On Flipboard

What and Where Do I Put a CTA?

Your calls to action should be clear, short, and relevant to the topics you’re sharing.

Here are a few placement examples. Always aim to be discreet and respect your reader’s flow:

1. Subscribe to My Magazine: This works well in the “notes” feature at the end of your sentence. You can share a nice welcoming comment and add something like this sentence after: “Enjoying the content? Follow us for more curated articles!”

2. Visit Our Website: “For more in-depth articles, visit our website at (your website).” Place this CTA at the bottom of your bio, or in one of your magazines.

3. Join the Discussion: “Have thoughts on this topic? Leave a comment and join the conversation!” This one works well at the bottom of a caption. The article you curated now becomes an article worthy of discussion. The caption will also end up in Mastodon and you might get a few nods.

4. Share This Story: “Found this interesting? Share it with your friends!” This Call To Action will motivate your readers to do something of value. It can be placed in a caption.

5. Follow Us on Our Profile: “Do you like this article? Follow our profile for more curated content.” It’s very hard to get followers on Flipboard! But if readers like your content, they’ll come back for more. So encourage them to follow you and they will see your magazines.

When curating Flipboard magazines, we never think of asking our readers to take action. To get more traffic we have to ask our followers to take action. A CTA makes your profile more interactive. It helps increase engagement, drive traffic, and build stronger connections with your readers.

Happy Flipping!
