How we make product design decisions.

When it comes to making design decisions, there are certain things you just don’t mess with.

One of those is including ‘free’ in your call-to-action.

Incorporating the word into your homepage results in more visitors converting to trials. In fact, in our internal audit of SaaS homepages, more than 95% included it somewhere.

When we make product decisions at Float, the art and science is knowing when to innovate and when to stick to conventions. We believe the difference between good and great products lies within this nuance. Every interaction is an opportunity to be more useful, more efficient, and to delight our users. At every stage we must recognize when we’re being too cute — adding cognitive load — and should stick with the familiar.

For example, our search bar can be used to filter your team’s schedule, create custom reports, and recall saved views. You can filter the schedule by virtually any keyword (from contractors to tentative projects), and it appears in the top left of all our pages. While you might typically expect to see the word ‘Search’ in a search bar field, it takes up precious real estate, and we found a magnifying glass icon could serve as an equally effective cue to search. This allowed us to replace ‘Search’ with what we feel is more valuable information: The total count of the search results.

The Float search bar.

Float is built on hundreds of these small decisions. We believe this process and pursuit to continuously improve are what helps make Float the best choice for your team scheduling.

(We also have ‘FREE’ on our homepage).
