By Wade G. Morgan.

The first part in a series from Wade’s LinkedIn campaign, #HowIGotHere, to share tips centered on principles he believes has helped him advance in his career. His hope is that someone else finds them valuable, or knows someone to share them with. He recognizes that not all of these tips will apply to all people, and some may feel uncomfortable. That said, these are all tactics he’s employed at various times throughout his career.

Principle: Practice Excellence Part I

Tactic: Before attempting to expand the scope of work you take on, make sure you’re doing what you’ve been hired to do at the highest level possible.

Reason: Being great at your role is the foundation of everything else you want to do in your career. If you do not know the bar of excellence required, figure it out as quickly as possible, and then raise it. People, especially those new in their careers, often attempt to do a million things from day one. The energy and passion are great, but make sure you’re handling business. You don’t want to put people in a position where they admire your hustle, though aren’t sure you have the discipline to focus.
