Customer Service: Don’t judge a book…

I once walked into a high end department store in my area with a baby in a stroller, a 10 year old and 8 year old and a 6 year old. I’m pretty sure I was saying things like:

“Don’t touch…. Come this way…. Let’s look over here…. I said follow me… Seriously, Don’t touch.”

I was armed with money to spend but probably looked like something the cat dragged in.

I was buying a gift, though now I can’t remember whom for. This particular store gift wraps so that’s always nice when you carry your own entourage with you where ever you go. Even one less task is reason for shopping there. Plus they have nice things.

Did anyone help me? Did anyone ask if I was finding what I was looking for? Did any one of those sales clerks ask how I was doing?

NOPE.

I won’t ever forget it. It hurt, it made me feel less valuable.

I don’t look look like a homeless person with really great looking kids any more. I was the mom who’s small children looked like they stepped out of a Justice catalog while I was sporting last years Target fashion, a disheveled pony tail and dark under eye circles. My kids are mostly grown and I have time to sleep and apply concealer. So, I still shop there.

My point is, who are you missing? What customer service are you NOT giving because you think that person either doesn’t have the money to spend or doesn’t want the product you’re selling. If you’re making judgements like that you’re likely missing out on great selling opportunities. Not only that, you could be hurting someones feelings.

My kids…Easter 2009…Me, not pictured, but probably wearing khakis from 2001.
