Starting a business from scratch

When my kids were little we had a book with the song of Michael Finneagan. At the end of every page were the words “begin again.” I would pause just before reading it until they couldn’t stand it and someone would yell “BEGIN AGAIN!” Everyone would laugh.

But sometimes it’s not so funny, you know. Begin again. For an adult that means that something has ended, perhaps it means a move, a relationship or sometimes, a business. Perhaps you’re a new consultant and beginning something new because something else ended.

You might feel as though you’re beginning this brand new business, your own business, from scratch. So let’s think on that a minute. (Even if you’re not, read on…maybe you know a new consultant that could use some encouragement.

When you make something from scratch you begin (again) with the ingredients. Flour, sugar, butter….

But what are the ingredients to starting your new business from the ground up?

A product, contacts, attitude

  1. You have chosen a great product! Take a minute next time you’re using your products to decide why you love them. Write it down, journal it. Develop your own adjectives based on your own experience. That’s what your potential customers are going to want to know, how do YOU feel about it. Bring yourself to a place of true belief in what you’re selling.
  2. .If you are brand new and don’t have a customer “base,” it’s time to make a list. Create categories for your list. My list would have titles like “Church, Gym, Homeschool Basketball, Homeschool Group, School, Family….etc.” After you’ve made this list of categories start writing down names from each category. You can also pour through your social media accounts to see who you know, but keep in mind, not everyone is there and you don’t want to leave anyone out.
  3. Have you ever heard the saying “attitude is everything.” The reason that saying exists is because attitude is everything. Keep your attitude positive by surrounding yourself with positive people. Talk to people who support you, write an affirmation and put it on your bathroom mirror. Not only will you feel more successful, you’ll actually be more successful. People are drawn to positivity like a magnet. And, of course, the opposite is true of negative people.

These are your raw ingredients. So much more has to happen to make your business successful. Listen to your director, attend training (or watch virtually.) Always focus on learning and never give up.

You’ve got exactly what it takes to make your own dreams a reality.
