Hiring: Airbnb Co-Host for our School Bus in the Desert
One of the best kept secrets in Los Angeles — the Starry Night Skoolie — is looking for its next host.
Overview
Airbnb is expanding its co-hosting abilities.
Our Starry Night Skoolie (read reviews on Airbnb and Hipcamp) is looking to grow with a new, compassionate co-host.
If you believe hospitality is a form of spiritual practice and service, this co-hosting opportunity is for you.
Job Description
The Starry Night Skoolie is a tiny house sanctuary and a place of refuge. People come here to reconnect with the sky, the silence, the land…and themselves.
We go above and beyond for guests because they fund our planting efforts, like our .25-acre Butterfly Forest.
The Skoolie’s new co-host is responsible for making sure each guest feels exceptionally welcomed and part of our story.
We curated this space for rest, relaxation, respite, and healing. Our hosting reflects this, as we consider each stay a success if each guest is able to drive away with uplifted spirits.
Compensation
- 60% of each booking.
- The remaining 40% goes to the nonprofit, which helps us grow our Tiny Forest.
- You will receive 100% of [positive] reviews, helping you grow your own Airbnb hosting experience.
- You can stay for free on the Skoolie whenever you’d like. Invite friends, family, throw a party — as long as the Skoolie is treated with love and care, and the plants are watered, our home is yours.
Responsibilities
- Preparing the Skoolie. The Skoolie requires 1–2 hours of prep work. This includes filling the water tank, dusting everything off, shaking out linens, checking the outhouse, restock supplies (coffee, paper towels, etc.) and general housekeeping (cleaning floors, corners, bookshelves, shower, sink, etc.).
- Checking In Guests. It takes a lot for a person to drive to the middle of nowhere in expectation of…a bus. Some people like to drive in and enjoy their time alone. Others like to be greeted in-person. Either way, guests should feel like we have prepared the space specifically for them, with their particular stay in mind. This includes creating signs, leaving snacks, hand-selecting recommended books, and other small gestures of warmth and hospitality.
- Being On-Call during each stay. While there hasn’t been a Skoolie emergency for many months, we still need to be on-call in case of an emergency.
- Inspecting the Skoolie after each stay. This can be done within three days of a guest’s stays. We like to leave positive reviews for guests who treat the Skoolie with love and care, which means we have to see what condition each guest left the bus in.
Requirements
- Immediate Responsiveness. If you are able to respond to texts with genuine kindness and care within five minutes of receiving them, you have what it takes to be an exceptional co-host.
- Reliable Transportation. We’re 100% off-grid, in the middle of nowhere, located next to Saddleback Butte State Park. Having your own car is necessary.
About Us
- Antelope Valley Proud. We’re based in East Lancaster. Neighboring towns include Hi Vista, Lake LA, Littlerock, Phelan, and more. We’re proud to be part of the land and its community.
- Caretakers At Heart. The Starry Night Skoolie was created to fund our nonprofit, For Every Star A Tree. Our mission is to steward the land by planting, cultivating, watering, and growing what we can. A spirit of service through hospitality — whether that’s through Airbnb or earthcare — is what makes our work unique.
How To Apply
Make a private YouTube video — no longer than one minute — and send it to us at StarryNightSkoolie (at gmail). Let us know the following:
- Why do you want to be a co-host — specifically for the Starry Night Skoolie?
- Tell us a story about the last time you cared for someone.
- Visualize a future where you’ve been the official co-host of our Skoolie for an entire year. What would make you feel like it was a success?
Final Note
Much like the Starry Night Skoolie, our Tiny Forest is a place of respite and refuge for the insects, birds, and animals that wander the desert, looking for food, safety, water, and comfort.
We’ve found stray dogs near the Tiny Forest. A cat under the Skoolie. Even desert foxes like to visit.
While often looked at as pests, we believe critters — like the mice, ants, bees, flies, and birds — are our co-conspirators and friends.
We view the Tiny Forest the same way we view the Starry Night Skoolie:
A way to practice spirituality in the form of caretaking.
Whether that’s for people, pollinators, animals, or ourselves.
Love from the Land,
