Across the landscape of strategic communication blogs we see hundreds of posts claiming to have the secret formula to internal communications perfection. In the world we live in today the technological proliferation is staggering, and to assume that we know the end all secret to communicating in an ever-changing, dynamic business landscape is something straight out of a L. Ron Hubbard book. We are not here to swing my hammer and knock down these idealists, but to help anyone we can in providing a more successful communications structure.

Here is part 1 of 6 of what we have discovered can drastically improve your communications network.

Clarify your Mission, Vision, and Value Statements

If you have not done this already, this should be your first step in improving your communications. This seems trivial, but it provides a concrete foundation for your employees to make decisions based off, and help you build your company ’s operations and processes around these ideals. The concepts should be taught in training and continued throughout employment. There should be no enforcement of the company mission, it does not exist to cause trouble, it exists to allow employees to make decisions on their own with the company’s interest at heart.

Develop Consistency

Constant feedback is appreciated at all levels of a company and should be a focal point in any communication structure. Providing a schedule can alleviate a lot of stress from employees day to day activities if they know when they will receive feedback or communicate with their team. Furthermore, it will create a backbone of confidence for new employees unsure of their performance and/or duties.

Streamline Channels

Whether or not you are a self sufficient employee or one who prefers constant feedback, you want your communication with your manager to be efficient. Spending hours in meetings every week is a great way to demoralize your employees and distract them from their work; this is why streamlining your channels is so important. If you can manage to keep the frequency and overall time spent communicating, both your employees and your bottom line with thank you.

Plan Ahead

As we briefly mentioned above, technology is growing at an exponential pace and is only going to accelerate. This means that you need to have contingency plans the ensure the future success of your company. Talk to your employees and continually try to improve your network in order to better prepare yourselves for tomorrow. Receiving feedback on every step of the channel will engage employees, and overall improve your network.

Use or Develop Tools and Resources

Utilizing resources will always benefit your company, as long as you understand your goal and how much you are willing to spend to accomplish it. This communication tenet filters into every point we have mentioned above. Communication software can provide the ability to communicate your mission and vision to the entire company on a regular basis, solidifying the concept in every employee. Coordinating a schedule becomes as easy as a click of a button, and communicating can be done instantaneously…
