Traveling serves many different purposes: to explore the world, meet other people and learn about ourselves. Sometimes, when life gets too crazy and we need a break from our everyday lives, traveling solo (and staying solo) throughout your trip may be just what the doctor ordered. Here are the best places to shack up by yourself for a few days without the worry of big crowds, touristy attractions or overtly expensive fares.

1. Bali, Indonesia

Spiritual, relaxing and rejuvenating is found in this breathtakingly beautiful spot. One of the best well-known spa destinations in the world, you will be able to unwind, unplug and not talk to anyone besides your masseuse if you so choose. Take in the sights of the rice fields and the Sacred Monkey Forest and visit the many temples and hidden gems for an enlightening experience.

2. Sedona, Arizona

Commune with nothing but the red rocks in this gorgeous landscape. Hike at your own pace, take a wine canoe tour or hangout on a mountain top. If you’re not much of an outdoors person, or want some pampering, Sedona is also known for its world-class spas.

3. Edinburgh, Scotland

If vacationing to you looks like staying in bed with a good book, this rainy city, boasting 191 rainy days a year to be exact, is for you. The country’s capital also has a thriving art and music scene — every year they host The Fringe Festival, the world’s largest arts festival.

4. Easter Island, Chile

This widely-known remote destination is a must to spend some quality alone time. The most of the tourist attractions here are the giant moai monoliths. Camp under the Polynesian stars, tour the caves, and explore the island’s treasures by foot or bike.

5. San Ignacio, Belize

This remote city has retained its rustic appeal despite a flood of tourism in other areas of Belize. Explore Mayan ruins at Cahal Pec, canoe the Macal River, and just lay on the beach without not many people in site.

6. El Chalten, Argentina

Hikers: put this on your list. This offbeat town is a hub for hippies and backpackers, and overlooks the northern sector of Parque Nacional Los Glaciares, home to thousands of gorgeous trails.

7. Albania

Roman ruins, good food, amazing scenery and very low prices can be found 300,000 miles south of its more popular neighbor, Croatia. Avoid the tourism and enjoy a more serene and solo experience here with the view of the Mediterranean.

8. Big Sur, California

No traffic lights, banks or strip malls will be found in this popular retreat spot. A nature lover’s paradise, you will book a cabin, write, make art and surround yourself with the company of the Pacific Ocean and vast forests.
