Three-member women’s team comprising of Pragnya Kondrakunta, Fatima, and Swapna Bhandari from Hyderabad bagged the first position at Hackadrone 2018, they developed an autonomous application on drones to promote women’s security. Their solution helps the victim to call a drone at the specific location and send real-time alerts to a control station and registered guardians.

Hackadrone — India’s first UAV hackathon was jointly organized by Cyient and DJI, in sponsorship with Microsoft and the Government of Telangana, it received over 4500 applications from which 617 ideas were selected, which was further shortlisted to 120 teams and was finally narrowed down to 7 finalist teams. Honourable Minister for IT, MA & UD, Government of Telangana, Sri K.T. Rama Rao graced the prizing ceremony and presented the awards to the winners.

The second position was awarded to the team FLY Ranger comprising of IT professionals Akshit Mahajan, Pramod Kumar, and Shubham Gupta. They developed a prototype for warehouse management to scan barcodes using UAVs in warehouse and order-fulfillment centers. They tackled the problem of navigation in the GPS-denied environment by mapping the area and distances using stereo cameras. They used DJI Matrice 100, Nvidia TX1 and ZED camera to prototype their idea.

A special recognition was given to tech professionals — Karmasakshi and Siddharth Chinoy from Team Quidich, a UAV based start-up in India. They developed and demonstrated their idea of creating a network of drones for urban security and surveillance especially for women’s safety. They demonstrated how a drone could reach the required location and act as a first responder on a simple press of SOS button on victim’s app. Their drone was also equipped with loud siren and lights, which can automatically trigger to alert people around the location. They used DJI M210 and FlytBase platform to build their solution.

FlytBase was proud to the mentoring partner for Hackadrone. Participations were given access to the whole platform: FlytOS, FlytCloud and all the developer tools.

Dhiraj Dhule, Director of Strategic Projects, FlytBase Inc. mentored the teams throughout, to successfully build and demo their drone application.

Thanks to Cyient and DJI, Hackadrone offered an opportunity for developers, start-up’s, tech professionals and students across India to develop commercial applications on drones. We look forward to the next edition of Hackadrone.
