A portrait of the author looking straight at the camera. The left side of his face is lit in pink while the right side is lit in blue. In the background, a circular orange light pierces through horizontal blinds.
A portrait the author’s wife took of him when he totally wasn’t looking.

This boy was born in Brazil, the land of soccer, samba, the Amazon rainforest, and the beautiful beaches of Rio. He wasn’t very good at soccer, though, and he completely lost interest in the sport by the time he became an adult.

The boy didn’t have enough motor coordination to learn the samba either, though he had enough of it to play the drums in a death metal band.

Video of the author rocking a ’stache during his drummer times.

He has never been to the Amazon forest, which is way too far from his home state — the southernmost Brazilian state, where it can get so cold some cities get a few inches of snow every couple of decades.

Did you know it can snow in Brazil? ❄️

The boy has never been to Rio either, though he’s been to China and Germany, studying robotics and artificial intelligence for his master’s degree in computer science. He knows nothing about China except that making autonomous humanoid robots walk on synthetic grass is extremely difficult. But he knows that, sometimes, when drinking with your friends in a small boat in Germany, you crush the can and yell “Junge,” which means — conveniently — “boy.”

I guess this boy isn’t quite what you expected of a Brazilian, eh? Sorry. Perhaps this is why he moved to Vancouver, Canada, at the beginning of 2022. He’s been slowly exploring the place, with his mismatched socks and his loving wife.

A pair of feet in black tennis shoes dangling from a seawall a few feet above clear sea water. The sock on the right foot has a pattern with pineapples while the other one has drawings of clown fish.

Adaptation has been… an adventure! Needless to say, this is the moment of this boy’s life when he’s learning the most about himself, the world, and life as a whole. In fact, this is a turning point, when this Brazilian boy is truly, finally becoming a man — whatever that means.

As part of the process, he’s being honest to himself about the fact that he desperately wants to write. So he stopped keeping his writing in the dark and, with the help of a secret society, he’s been sharing it with the world. He’s been mostly writing about distant, dystopian worlds — although some of it is just the view of the waves crashing on the shore.
