If you went to high school, you probably joined a club, or a sport, or maybe you never got past the thinking-about-it stage. Whatever the case, they were there! Perhaps one caught your eye, or maybe one left you thinking how anyone thought of making that a club. I’ll be focusing on five of the most eye-catching clubs and activities from Fort Collins High School, Poudre High School, and Rocky Mountain High School.

5. eSports

Since February 2019, the Colorado High School Activities Association has recognized eSports as an official activity. Since then, multiple team-based electronic sports have been the epicenter of state-wide competition, and the scene at one Fort Collins based high school has skyrocketed as of late. Rocky Mountain High School’s eSports team had their three-player Rocket League squad win the state title earlier this year, as chronicled by the Coloradoan. Rocket League is often described as ‘car soccer,’ where cars drive and fly through a field encased in a dome while trying to score in a small goal. The team had made the championship series, a best-of-seven contest where the Rocky Mountain squad had come back from a three games to one deficit to win 4–3.

4. Bike Club

Truly unique to a city like Fort Collins, where biking is almost as common as driving, are the cycling clubs of Fort Collins High School, Rocky Mountain High School, and Poudre High School. These clubs are run in conjunction with the Colorado High School Cycling League, a non-profit organization that provides learning and competition to high school cyclists in states including Colorado, New Mexico, South Dakota, and Wyoming.

3. Looking Glass

If you happen to be the creative type, the Rocky Mountain Looking Glass is for you! Every year since 2009, Rocky Mountain High School has given its most creative students an outlet for their work in visual art, poetry, storytelling and more. Throughout each school year, submissions are taken for students to make their mark in a yearly magazine that showcases the school’s most talented literary and visual creators. While more recent editions of the magazine must be ordered and paid a fee for, the 2017 edition and older editions are available for public eyes. There are hundreds of pages and works to go through!

2. Drones Flyer Club

Who doesn’t like drones? Among those involved in the Fort Collins High School Drones Flyer Club, they are loved! Run by technology teachers Chuck Hubbeling and Steven “Garrett” Johnson, this club could bring out the technology nerd in any of us.

1. KLYD TV

While most high schools have some sort of media outlet that mostly includes photography and writing, the last unique selection on this list comes from Fort Collins High School. The KLYD TV group is a news broadcast group run completely by students for the purpose of entertaining and informing staff and students alike. They do an incredible job of intertwining entertainment and information, creating genuinely funny graphics and cheesy acting scenes to keep audiences engaged while informing them of upcoming events, reminders, new information, and so much more.
