With old town looming as one of the premier food experiences in any college town, it is easy to get caught eating the same local staples week to week. This can lead to some food fatigue which I definitely experienced during my first few months in the city. After this stretch, I started seeking out some new food spots which led me to some favorites that are a little more off the beaten path.

  1. Good Times
Big Daddy’s Bacon Cheeseburger by Good Times

Located just north of campus, Good Times is a somewhat inconspicuous spot that offers some of the best burgers and ice cream in Fort Collins as fast-food fare. With its all-natural and small-batch style food, Good Times offers some of Northern Colorado’s freshest meals that are perfect for a midday or late-night meal. While the burgers are delicious, the real can’t miss item on the menu is the frozen custard which is made in small batches throughout the day. From the aptly named spoonbenders to the classic vanilla cones, Good Times custard will hook you on the local burger joint.

2. Lucky’s Market

The Prospect Sandwich by Luckys Market

Across the street from Good Times lies Lucky’s Market which is known for being “Colorado’s Independent Grocer,” which also happens to have some of the best sandwiches around. With the deli’s made-to-order sandwich menu featuring subs named after different Fort Collins streets, you know you’re in for a delicious local treat as soon as you step up to the counter. And, if you’re not feeling sandwiches Lucky’s also has a sushi and ramen station that offers even more mouthwatering options to fill your stomach.

3. DGT

Nestled underneath the popular coffee shop Alley Cat is DGT, short for D*mn Good Tacos, a hidden gem for lovers of street-style tacos. The shop’s small menu of vegetarian and meat tacos offers options for health-conscious and junk eaters alike. With signature toppings like crispy cheese and chili sour cream DGT packs a lot of interesting flavors and textures into a few delicious bites that will have you craving seconds. Also if you stop by, don’t forget to try some of their creative drinks like their spicy chocolate horchata.

4. Chick n’ Cone

For people who are spending time at the Exchange, it is easy to miss the small stall in the back that houses Chick n’ Cone which offers a unique spin on the long-standing concept of chicken and waffles. Their handheld chicken and waffles feature sauced nuggets, nestled in a crispy waffle cone. The signature cone is delicious with both sweet and spicy sauces on the chicken but my favorite way to enjoy their chicken is in the form of a chicken sandwich. The sandwich features the same sauced tenders on a soft brioche bun. Whichever way you prefer, Chick n’ Cone is a great spot to enjoy some good eats.

5. Mugs Coffee Lounge

Breakfast Sandwich by Mugs

Delicious brunch is something that isn’t hard to find in Fort Collins but as someone who loves to study at coffee shops, I was not expecting to find a new favorite among one of these spots. With super customizable breakfast sandwiches and tasty burritos, Mugs is a great place for people who love a good savory breakfast. Their pastries are also a treat for anyone who is craving something sweet. With two north Fort Collins locations, Mugs is a great spot for some breakfast and coffee on the go.
