Marijuana — also referred to as weed, herb, pot, grass, bud, ganja, or Mary Jane is most commonly used by young adults everywhere. It can be used in many ways including recreationally, medically, or even found in consumable baked goods. As more states legalize marijuana for medical and recreational uses, there is a growing interest in the diverse impacts that different kinds, such as Indica and Sativa, can cause. Cannabis comes in two varieties: Cannabis sativa and Cannabis indica. This means they have a lot of similarities, but they also have a lot of differences. Understanding the effects and distinctions between different strains will contribute to you being a healthier, safer, and educated cannabis user.

Growth Patterns

Typical Indica and Sativa plants genetically differentiate when it comes to the common growth patterns and plant outcomes. Indica has a lot more THC than Sativa, as it turns out due to the variety of genotypes of these subspecies. Indica plants more commonly grow short and stocky, featuring thicker leaves that are often seen as broader than others. Sativa plants tend to be taller and skinnier and may even be lanky in appearance, with leaves that are thin and pointed.

Due to Indica’s short and stocky growth patterns, they are more commonly recommended amongst growers because they reach maturity much quicker than Sativa’s plant growth. Indica’s short stock growth allows users to place it inside in smaller environments while it is recommended Sativa grows outdoors due to the expected height increase.

Both plants benefit from direct sunshine, which aids in the production of stems and leaves in marijuana plants through the process of photosynthesis. These stems and leaves subsequently serve an important function in absorbing additional sunlight, which is ultimately used to fuel future growth.

Type of High

Indica and Sativa both deliver a type of high, but differentiate on how the body reacts. Indica strains are categorized as a “body high” while Sativa is described as a “head high”.

Indica’s “body high” promotes a sense of relaxation in the body. It brings the user a sense of peace and relaxation throughout the body rather than peace of mind. This strain works as an appetite promoter, sleeping aid, and most commonly medically used as a pain reliever.

Sativa’s “head high” promotes a more energetic high, when you feel more productive and concentrated. Many people use Sativa to get a head high when they need to relieve anxiety or depression while remaining attentive. It increases the user’s energy, alertness, and creativity.

Medical Purpose

While both strains have a medical purpose, those tend to differentiate on where the medical focus is.

Indica is ideal for both mental and physical relaxation as it is a relaxing and soothing strain. The strain has also been shown to help treat nausea, acute pain, anxiety, seizures, lupus, and multiple sclerosis. Indica is most commonly used to decrease these physical and mental pains through the sense of peace the strain brings.

While most importantly the serotonin released, which affects learning, mood, sleep, anxiety, and appetite, is increased by Sativa. It acts to treat anxiety and depression, as well as help with any chronic pain. Some people even consume a small amount of sativa before engaging in physical activities due to the quick energy increase.

Appropriate Usage

Although marijuana usage is practiced medically and recreationally, there is a recommended appropriate usage for both strains. Understanding the effects and most appropriate usage times will contribute to a safe experience and allow the user to gain all the benefits that come with it.

As described, Indica brings a sense of relaxation that may impact what more has to come in the user’s day. Indica is highly recommended with nighttime usage. While Sativa brings a sense of energy, it is highly recommended for daytime usage.

Hybrids

Hybrids are marijuana strains that combine Indica and Sativa genetics to create both effects. Users generally find hybrids to be entertaining, and they can be both energetic and calming, it’s the best of both worlds.
