Almost everyone knows what it’s like to eat a homemade cookie right out of the oven. The warm gooey texture combined with a cold glass of milk — I bet you’re thinking about your favorite kind right now.

But what can you do when you live in a dorm room with no oven? What can you do when your in-laws plan a last-minute trip to visit? How can you bring yourself to make cookies when there is so much more to do? What is the answer? Order out.

Fort Collins has approximately 10 or more different cookie stores that pop up when you type “cookie places near me” into Google. However, I truly believe that Mary’s Mountain Cookies — MMC for short — has been the go-to-cookie-specific bakery in the area since 1986.

When you enter MMC, after taking a stroll down College Avenue, the first thing you are greeted with is the sweet smell of fresh cookies. The mixture of melted chocolate, cinnamon, and everything delicious, lingers in the air while your eyes focus on the 10–15-foot display case filled with an enormous variety of cookies!

Sophie Gentle, a sophomore at Colorado State University, informed me that she and her friends, “… like Mary’s better because the cookies are bigger, and they have unique flavors! However, Mary’s doesn’t deliver… which is sad”. MMC has a wide variety of cookies, and special seasonal ones as well.

However, when compared to Insomnia Cookies, a lot of people were torn about which place they liked better. Insomnia Cookies has been known for warm-fresh-delivered cookies since 2006. According to Alissa Walin, a junior at CSU, “Insomnia cookies have been known to be butter heavy, creating a flat-looking cookie, but once you take a bite into a chocolate chip cookie from Insomnia, your mouth starts to water for more”. So, what makes Mary’s so much better?

According to MMC’s backstory, the company was started because of a creative chef named Mary. She was working at a dude ranch and every morning; she would pack huge cookies in the saddlebags of the guests. At around noon, they would open their saddlebags to reveal huge mountain-style cookies, moist and found in one piece. The delicious cookies were heard all around and people begged her to open a store. Therefore, she opened a small cookie shop in downtown Fort Collins.

The history of the company, built on the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains, is what makes MMC the place to go to. The history that created mouth-watering cookies and brought friendly smiles to the heart of Fort Collins brings joy to every customer who enters their front door.

Why settle for a box of flat cookies dropped off by a stranger? Go to Mary’s Mountain Cookies and enjoy the unique atmosphere. What is there to lose?
