There are a surprising number of similarities between some groups of people who seem completely opposed to each other on a particular topic. However, if examined closely, then it can be possible to find common ground. In some cases opposing groups on a particular subject may actually have more opinions in common than they do in opposition to each other.

An example is animal rights activists and hunters. They seem opposed to each other at first glance. However, many hunters want to conserve nature, disapprove of factory farming, want to protect the ecosystem from invasive species, etc. Most hunters also humanely kill an animal which prevents it from dying a slow death by disease/ starvation/ getting eaten alive…or a combination of all 3. Hunters also usually target the overpopulated animals or invasive species. Removing some of these animals can help create a more balanced ecosystem that allows all animals to flourish.

Finding common ground is a first step to connecting with other people and creating a harmonious society. If we start with establishing the ways in which we are similar, then it can be easier to later understand and accept our differences. If a person or organization promotes differences among people, then beware of what they are saying because they may have a negative or self-serving agenda.
