It has been one year since we released Fog of World 2 on the iOS app store. During the past year, a lot of people keep asking us when the Android version will come out. Unfortunately, as an independent development team, we can only focus on one thing at a time. However, since we just released version 2.1.7 to the App Store this week, and which version finally met our expectation of the version 2. Now I think it’s time to build the Android version.

Last week, we asked our followers on Facebook and Twitter about what Android phone and version they are using. And we got a lot of feedback and helpful suggestions. Thank you. After thinking about it thoroughly. We decided that Fog of World will run on Android Nougat (7.0) and higher. Let me explain why.

Back to three years ago, when we just started developing Fog of World 2. I already knew that I would adopt Apple’s Metal graphics API someday. That’s why Fog of World requires Apple A7 processor or later since the first day. We finally migrated its graphics backend from OpenGL to Metal in version 2.1. It was ten months later since version 2.0 released.

Like Metal, there is also a modern graphics API called Vulkan on the Android platform. These new-generation graphics technologies provide better performance with lesser resource usage. Even though the Android version of Fog of World should still debut with OpenGL backend just like the iOS version, but I know it will migrate to the Vulkan backend eventually. That is the main reason why Fog of World will run on Android Nougat and higher, as most Android hardware support Vulkan since Nougat.

On the other hand, the cost would be too high to support old Android versions as Android is notorious for its fragmentation. Worse, it may slow down the development progress significantly to resolve the compatibility issues. So, that’s it.

We will publish more development progress and information about public beta when it’s ready. Don’t forget to follow us if you are interested. Thanks for watching.
