So often,
it is easier
for a son

to aspire
to be
their father

Simple,
to see
the straightened back

and a path
to follow

Easy,
to see fear;
feel pain,
and respond accordingly

I pray,
you don’t feel
like your love
was absent
or inadequate

I hope,
we didn’t
neglect you

in the quest
for our father’s approval

I wish,
you never
felt like
our fear
was bigger
than your love

I hope,
you don’t
look at us

and see
the echoes
of your nightmares.
