What is the best way to teach a child to read? This timeless question has been debated for many years.

Educating young minds has never been a one-size-fits-all solution and never will be. Early in my teaching career, I was evaluated on how many of my 28 energetic first-graders were “on task” by reading the same words on the same page at the same time. Even as a new teacher, I knew right away that we could accomplish more by teaching foundational skills, providing visual support, and differentiating instruction along the way.

How can you teach students how to read if they don’t understand the sound/letter connection? How can we teach reading comprehension if they can’t read the words? Furthermore, how can we possibly test other subject area knowledge through reading if students don’t understand the questions? What about additional challenges faced by English Language Learners?

This broken system has perpetuated a lack of progress for too long. We owe our students and teachers more, much more.

“Good is the enemy of great!” Jim Collins wrote.

What if we took this well-known business principle and applied it to the expectations of our education system? Our students deserve a chance to reach their potential and not just be good but great. Therefore, teachers need resources beyond good to great.

Folio delivers exceptional visual learning tools made for teachers by teachers.
