10 things I learned while making friends as an adult

Everybody knows that making friends as an adult is difficult. We are met with many hurdles such as a lack of time or nervousness. The main difference with our childhood is that new friendships do not happen as organically since — except for our colleagues — we do not have many people witnessing our everyday lives. As children, we happened to make friends with the kids we would see every day. We only had things in common: common classes, common teachers, common interests, common neighborhoods, etc.

At the beginning of the pandemic, I felt very lonely. I had just moved to a new country and with the lockdown restrictions, I couldn’t meet anybody. I stayed on my own for a long time and it deeply impacted my mental health. Hopelessness was starting to get to me but life eventually went back to normal. The first thing I did was trying to connect to other humans out there. I was in need of genuine connections so, that’s what I did. Here’s what I’ve learned on this journey.
