Why Don’t Mosquitoes Get Smashed by Raindrops?
The Unseen Agility of Mosquitoes and Life’s Resilience in the Face of Adversity
Today was a sunny day. After work, I took the subway back home.
Just as I stepped out of the subway, the sky suddenly became overcast and a downpour started, catching me off guard.
I had to quickly find a place to take shelter from the rain. I called my wife and asked her to come pick me up.
As I was waiting, I suddenly felt a strong itch on my arm. Upon closer inspection, I realized it was a damn mosquito bite.
While I was scratching the itch, a strange question suddenly popped into my mind:
Why don’t mosquitoes get smashed by raindrops during a rainy day?
I fell into deep contemplation, curious about this question, so I opened my phone and Googled it.
The weight of a single drop of water is about 50 times that of a mosquito. So, why don’t mosquitoes get smashed by raindrops during a rainy day?
A Ph.D. student from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology captured the scene of mosquitoes escaping in the rain with a high-speed camera:
When a raindrop hits heavily on one side of a mosquito’s wing, it tilts 50 degrees to the side that was hit, allowing the raindrop to slide off the wing.
If it hits the body, the mosquito does not resist but instead quickly descends with the raindrop towards the ground.
At the same time, it seizes the opportunity to separate from the raindrop laterally and then flies straight, saving its life.
Mosquitoes, such tiny creatures, are surprisingly so smart, which really amazed me!
Imagine, even with heavier raindrops, mosquitoes can escape desperate situations because they adapt to changes in their surrounding environment.
The way you think determines the way out; mindset changes life.
I’ve heard a saying:
“The only constant in life is constant change.”
In many aspects of life, all you need to do is open your mind, and more choices will be available.
As long as you are prepared, change will not leave you in a panic. Without preparation, endless despair awaits.
By observing life carefully, such examples are also very common:
- finding a good job and thinking that you can rest easy from then on, only to encounter company layoffs;
- entering into marriage and thinking that you will accompany your partner for the rest of your life, but not nurturing it, and in the end, you have to part ways;
- childhood friends who have known each other since they were young, thinking that they will support each other, but as time goes by, they drift apart.
So, we must understand that, in fact, no job can be stable for a lifetime; no life can always be peaceful and good.
It’s just that we desire stability so much that we ignore its changes. Many people in reality, clearly trapped in life and suffering, still repeatedly persuade themselves to muddle through.
However, just like cheese that will eventually be consumed, complacency will not make things better but will make the situation more passive.
Therefore, true stability is not a position or a stable life, but a state. No matter how many storms there are in life, we have the ability to turn the situation around.
Ah, my wife has come to pick me up. Friends, let’s talk next time, haha.
