The ketogenic diet is not easy. Anyone who says it is, probably isn’t doing it correctly or they are just flat out lying to you. Either way, they are full of it. It gets even harder when your family isn’t on board or you are the only one in your family doing it. These things might get in the way but you can prepare for them and get a jump ahead on your keto lifestyle.

Here’s how:

Step 1: Get mentally prepared

It isn’t going to be easy. If you think your body is going to love you for cutting out carbs and sugar after years of training it to love them, you are sadly mistaken. We have heard it many times, it’s an old saying but it is true.

“Nothing in life worth having is easy.”

It takes commitment to dig into a lifestyle change like this. That’s what the ketogenic diet is all about. Changing your life. Do some reading, ask your keto friends, and read these tips, then dive in.

Step 2: Learn how to set up your macros

Some folks opt for the lazy version of keto but for the person looking to commit to the lifestyle I don’t advise doing that. It’s to easy to fall off when your not completely committed. There are quite a few apps out there that can help you track what your eating. I use the app my fitness pal. It is free, easy to use and does everything you’ll need. Usually for a true keto diet you are looking at 70% of your calories coming from fat, 20% from protein, and 10% from healthy carbs. Keep that in mind as you get started.

Step 3: Clear out the pantry and kitchen

Is your pantry full of breads, cookies, and all those sugars and carbs? It’s time to get rid of all of it. Don’t want to waste all that food? Take it to a local shelter and donate it. Trust me, you don’t want to give yourself any chance to dig into those carbs during a time of weakness. It’s time to suck it up and toss it out.

Step 4: Drink lots of water

One of your hesitations to starting the ketogenic diet might be your fear of the ‘keto flu’. If you are scared you’ll feel sick don’t be. It is nothing that will hurt you and you can take steps to insure you don’t have to deal with the symptoms. One of the biggest mistakes people make is that they forget to drink water. Drink plenty of water and make sure you increase your sodium and magnesium intake. If you do this you should be perfectly fine.

Step 5: Have restaurant options ready

One of the struggles that people have with while on the keto diet is how they can still eat out with friends while also staying on track. Take the time to look at your favorite restaurants and find a way to make it work into the keto macros. There are plenty of ways to make it happen, and most restaurants will leave items off your plate if you ask them too. Make a list of your favorites and make sure you keep it close when friends and family decide they want to eat out.

Good luck!
