Eve
Just Breathe
Eve is a high-tech solution to personalized nutrition. Slender and sleek, she seamlessly fits in with your kitchen appliances, however she is no ordinary gadget. Eve takes a daily read of your nutrient needs using breath partition chromatography technology and uses this information to generate a customized algae supplement to alleviate any nutrient deficiencies. Perfect for consumers of all ages, Eve was originally conceived to provide critical nutrients to expecting moms as a means for giving their newborns a nutritional head start.
When confronting the complex theme of food access, our team decided to target children ages 0–5, an age critical to ensuring overall developmental success throughout their life. Knowing that this crucial development begins within the womb, we realized that a child’s nutrition really starts with the mother. Currently, expectant mothers are forced to swallow large synthetic and unpalatable horse-pills daily, which add up over nine months. Pregnant women agonize over health decisions, overwhelmed by the amount of prenatal nutritional information on the web, especially concerning what not to do. Very rarely does a woman have a consistent and positive source of affirmation that she is properly nourishing her developing baby.
Eve is an elegant alternative to the one-size-fits-all “solution.” This personalized mini food computer maximizes her growing power by focusing solely on one of earth’s most nutrient dense foods, algae. In addition to its ability to rapidly regenerate, algae is rich in bioavailable nutrients that are critical to pregnant women and their developing babies — including folic acid, vitamin Bs, nucleic acids, live enzymes, and Omega 3s. Algae is also unique from land plants in that it is a complete protein, making it an ideal supplement.
But what pregnant woman wants to eat slimy green goo? (or anyone for that matter). Eve seamlessly integrates the algae with other ingredients to make something tasty without ever seeing it… because morning sickness is real.
When breathing onto Eve, you not only give her life in the form of CO2 (which algae needs to grow), but she also takes a reading on the nutrients your body is craving. After harvesting a single serving size of the algae, Eve indicates what other ingredients can be added to the blending chamber on top via her interactive touchscreen monitor. Maybe you’re lacking potassium, and she shows a half a banana, or you need calcium and iron, and she suggests a handful of spinach… Maybe you’re just in the mood for a tangerine, so you toss that in too. Once the food is ready, you simply squeeze the top, suctioning your concoction into a portable silicon pouch so you can enjoy your personalized health boost on the go.
During our prototyping process, it became very clear that we were creating Eve for a very specific type of user, and that our product might not be affordable for all women at first. In the spirit of equitable nutrient access for all, we would love to see a concept like Eve (or a personalized food computer of some sorts) be sent to every expectant mother as standard procedure. Our team was inspired by the Danish baby box model, in which the government sends every expectant mothers a care package with a blanket and baby clothes inside a box that can be turned into a bed. From a public health perspective the finances begin to make sense — investing in pregnant women is investing in our future, and evens out the developmental playing field. For now however, we have hope that a product like Eve could begin the conversation about personalized — and non-synthetic — forms of nutrition, and give pregnant mothers a chance to stop worrying and just breathe.
