Spring Break Family at Home

I know a lot of you were planning on hitting an awesome tech conference like SXSW in Austin or strolling all-inclusive beaches in Cancun but our plans are changing quickly. There’s a good possibility we are going to have to bunker in and think about life on Zoom, more Netflix, more family time and, of course, snacks.

Millions of people do not quite have the opportunity to go all-in on social distancing with work and schooling but for those of us privileged and looking forward (me!) to less travel, we’ve created a list of good snacks to load up on in the coming days.

I chatted with some team members at Journey Foods and we came up with a list of foods that will help you emerge without feeling like a zombie. We will be updating these in the coming days but here’s a list of several items that may keep you energized and sane over the next few weeks.

Key snacks that pack a powerful nutrient punch and last longer:

  1. Frozen berries
  2. High-protein veggie sausages and burgers
  3. Riced cauliflower
  4. Black beans, lentils, and other pulses (aka more beans)
  5. Frozen green beans
  6. Low-sodium beef or veggie jerky
  7. Popcorn (for the many hours of Netflix)
  8. Low-sugar popsicles (for when you watch Gentefied on Netflix)
  9. Bag of potatoes, tangerines, and green apples. These can all last 14 days strong.

Managing Health

If you deal with a chronic disease or ailment — for example, anxiety or inflammation — make sure you have enough anti-inflammatory or functional snacks. These may be in the form of the following:

  1. Anti-Inflammatory spices including — ground ginger, turmeric, cayenne.
  2. Chia Seeds (just throw them on everything — haha)
  3. Probiotic drinks
  4. Supplement powders for adaptogenic and high-vitamin dosing: baobab, ashwagandha, maca
  5. Protein bars

Don’t forget the bottled water and filters!

We lost the founder of Trader Joe’s this week so it may be a good time to jump in a local store and help bring his vision for quality, affordable foods into all of our homes.

And finally, take good care of yourself first. Wash your hands, please!! don’t sneeze into your hands, rethink your sleep routine, and find ways to bunker down and smile. We will all learn so much from this. Find more ways to disconnect, be present at home, and enjoy some good ol’ snack foods.
