Finishing undefeated in the regular season and playing at home came with pressure for the Chicago Mustangs Premier side, but the team proved they are the best by defeating Vitesse Dallas 7-4 to win the PASLP Winter National Championship! The two teams also met in round-robin play on Saturday with Dallas coming out on top.
Vitesse Dallas came into the final day as the top seed remaining, going 2-0-1 during pool play to win Group A. Opening the tourney with a 3-3 tie against Tacoma Galaxy, Dallas earned victories over Chicago (5-1) and Illinois Fire (8-2) to clinch their spot in the semifinals. After dismissing Colorado Blizzard 5-1, Vitesse Dallas was set for the championship.
Mustangs Premier went 2-1 on opening day, defeating Illinois Fire (6-0) and Tacoma Galaxy (3-1). That was enough to earn the second spot in Group A and a semifinal matchup against Group B winner River City Saints. Chicago proved to be much too strong for the Midwest Division champs, defeating River City by the score of 5-1.
Chicago got on the scoreboard first when Joel del Toro scored late in the opening quarter. Gilberto Alfaro made it 2-0 in the second before Vitesse Dallas went on to score four unanswered. It was not until the final minute of quarter three before the Mustangs Premier broke their scoring draught. Dallas held a 4-3 advantage at the end of three quarters.
Mustangs Premier took control early in the final frame, scoring three times to lead 6-4. A last-minute empty-net goal made the final 7-4 Chicago.
