“Your entire life can change in a year, make it this one.” — Ann

It took me 6 months of non-stop swinging the bat over and over just to get that first developer job.

I promised myself that I will make it happen, whatever it takes.

But most of the things come with a price, I already know that before I plunged in.

I cast down all my cards. It wasn’t enough.

I know I need to work harder; I was prepared for the sacrifices I need to give up, but even then it took a lot more than I expected.

Looking back, I then understand that it was the very thing I needed to see the bigger picture, then a whole new world just opened.

Because this is only just the beginning

Some people keep saying that web development was only good if you started years ago, well it is not true at all.

If you started 5 years ago as I did, it wasn’t as easy as you think.

Starting 5 years ago and starting today, both have their own pros and cons.

5 years ago there were only a few resources available compared to today.

The truth is, I didn’t even know if learning to code on my own could give me a job, after a few months I thought programming was so impossible to learn, it was just so f****** hard, to be honest.

But thankfully, my dad raised me as a stubborn one, if you want to know how I did it? My answer would be — just keep showing up no matter how impossible, no matter how hard, just take it day by day, that’s just it.

The best way to learn programming is to keep programming, that would be the best advice I can give to my-5-yrs-ago-self.

Starting web development today as you can imagine the job competition against other developers has also risen, getting that first developer job becomes more competitive than we had 5 years ago.

Let me tell you, this is only just the beginning. The more advanced our technology becomes, the more people are going to adapt and take advantage of the convenience, the more businesses will also embrace this new platform.

Which means more demand for the developers.

Stop thinking about the web development itself and start thinking about Technology. Do you really think there’s an end to this? I don’t think so.

It is growing; it is progressing as fast as it can be, so why are you questioning it? Thousands of applications and programs are being deployed every day.

Because it is a skill

And with skills, no one can take it away from you.

The best investment we can ever do is to invest in ourselves, just like our health, our well-being, we also need to gain as many skills as we can.

If we can work for someones else’s dream, we can also find time to work for ourselves.

You can never go wrong when working for yourself, even if you decide to no longer pursue the journey you’ve still gained skills, but I think once you got the momentum going, I doubt you would think of giving up.

Just remember this, nothing will make sense, not even after a year, I was everywhere in my first couple years, realizing it now I could just laugh at myself, but then that is how we grow, that is how we learn things, trial and error like mostly that we do when debugging, so as in the real world.

Becoming a developer is so worth it, it was the best decision I have ever done, and if I have to do it over, I might change a few things to save some tears but knowing what I know now, it was definitely worth the shot.

Because you can think of it as a long-term investment

One who achieves small victories will eventually achieve big ones.

and until then, one adapts to the terrain, meaning we need to win small battles before we think about winning the war.

I have this written on the first page of my notebook; I read this every morning before I open my laptop and before I check on the things I needed to do.

Starting our day right, by reminding ourselves of the reasons of why we do what we do, and reminding ourselves that it will take time,

Becoming a developer is a slow process, but without you really seeing it you are basically building your way to the top.

Because it will never be easy, that’s for sure, but it is possible.

And it is the only thing we need — so do it scared.

They just can’t beat someone who doesn’t give up. It was my motivation; it was my direction; it was my little light of hope during late nights and when taking my early morning coffee.

It was funny to realize that one of our best motivator is not being born in a rich family — we cannot change that.

But the good news is, we can change the ending, and we can start changing it right now, our children can then live a better ones than we had.

This opportunity of working in technology, as a developer or engineer has a lot of benefits, the pay, the opportunities that comes along, the world is changing toward our field, and the door is opening right in front of you, all you need to do is to take it.

Because it is life-changing

It definitely changed my life.

Everything that I have now been the luxury of my yesterday's.

If you don’t like where you are, then why stay there, one reason I started web development is so I can leave my stupid non-tech job, I didn’t like it, in fact, I hated it so badly.

A job where I can easily be replaced in a day, even after working for years.

And the best way to avoid that is to make yourself valuable by gaining skills, by making yourself needed, by continually growing.

Instead of chasing things, make yourself valuable and let them chase you.

One good thing I’ve learned after like almost a hundred job rejections not just from preliminary interviews and also during a few final interviews is that you cannot catch a dog by chasing them, instead look for something that they want and they will surely come to you.

I made myself valuable; I taught myself whatever is necessary, and then everything changed — they came to me.
