AEye values Innovation and Creativity. To cultivate technology thought leaders who continually innovate and create reliable products that save lives, we’ve shaped an atmosphere that promotes creativity, collaboration, and idea-sharing in all forms.

As Albert Einstein said:

“The true sign of intelligence is not knowledge but imagination.”

That’s why, this week, we decided to propose a creative challenge to all our Team Members:

Write a Haiku about autonomous vehicles, LiDAR, iDAR, AEye, point clouds, or anything else related to the autotech industry.

All entries were anonymously submitted and judged by AEye Chief Scientist, Dr. Allan Steinhardt, based on criteria of his choosing. The winning Haiku were ultimately selected on:

  1. Poetic quality
  2. AEye centric
  3. Unicity

Of the 46 submissions received, our judge narrowed the list down to his top three winners.

Below are the winning entries and what our judge had to say about each of them:

Haiku 1

Image and a cloud
Together, they see the world
Take a spin with us

By Karthik Chellappan, AEye Sr. Software Engineer, Perception

Note from our judge:

‘See’ emerges from fusion of camera and LiDAR. Alone they are blind, but together, they don’t just ‘see,’ they see ‘the world’! The poem draws the reader in to the AEye mission, not demanding ‘blind consent,’ but suggesting a ‘spin’ in our car, itself a delightful play in words.

Haiku 2

By Sundar Vokkarne, AEye Sr. Manufacturing Manager

Note from our judge:

These lines seem at first incongruous and certainly cause the reader to ponder, as all good poetry does. The first line speaks to focused decisions vs pretty pictures, a theme we hit on a lot. The second is a play on words: ‘precision’ is usually used to describe the technical properties of a ‘dumb’ sensor, while ‘clarity’ speaks the language of human understanding. Like a Rorschach ink blot, the clarity and insight is not within the objective picture itself, but rather, in what it reveals about each human actor interacting with the blot. This ‘subjective’ dimension speaks to the need for perception engines, such as AEye’s, to ‘grok’ humans, much like the way a psychoanalyst uses an ink blot. AEye ultimately seeks to infer the intent of humans within traffic flow and act accordingly — sensor data alone is as sterile and devoid of meaning as an ink blot without a patient!

Haiku 3

Design, build, demo
Meet, Respond, refine, repeat
iDAR for the win

By Jennifer Deitsch, AEye Communications Director

Note from our judge:

Like the products we develop, our culture is unique! We don’t build fixed raster scan compliant devices. Instead, like iDAR itself, we are agile, intelligent and adaptive. This makes us an unstoppable team!

Honorable Mentions

I see you, and you
Brake! Stop! Small child chases ball
I see you, and you…

by using iDAR
cars will drive while humans rest
the future is here

Autumn leaves so bright
Falling to the ground like snow
Why did my car stop?

We’re on a mission
Fewer highway tragedies
LiDAR can save lives

walking in crosswalk
young driver is not looking
thank God for AEye

So many lasers
Probing obstacles unseen
Ever vigilant

New fifteen fifty
Can see further than an
Eagle at sea

lurking in darkness
iDAR point cloud can discover
pedestrians intention

How to use Lasers?
Go forth and tell us, photon
What’s the Time of Flight?

Ah morning commute
before you know, the car drives
autonomously

We’re on a mission
Fewer highway tragedies
LiDAR can save lives

Chaos comes at night
drivers rely on AEye
nothing escapes our sight

Invisible light
To perceive like a human
Confident progress

iDAR scans the land
Further than the eye can see
Collecting Data

photons in the air
flying at the speed of light
help us find our way

An agile laser
Light Detection and Ranging
But smart about it

Much can be deduced
By an AE110 sleuth
Mounted on a car

Bore-sighted cam’ra
Seamlessly fused with LiDAR
Quality data
