I Miss You
A Poem For My Daughter
I miss you.
Like my lungs miss the air,
Like my heart misses blood.
You came into my life,
Full of energy, life, love.
A unique mix
Of amazing-frustrating,
Of incredible-stubborn.
I knew from the first day
I would fight for you, until my last breath.
I would slay the haters, viscerate the unbelievers,
Turn my back on those that didn’t see your marvel.
You bring light, in every step, smile.
Your bravery and courage, greater than a planet.
You have overcome the deepest darkest hell.
You have embraced life,
With two hands, a creative head, an open heart.
You accept and envelop,
The dispossessed, the minority, the pecked-at, the broken.
You lift them to heights,
They never knew existed.
You’re contagious and adventurous.
Your magic, a balm,
Your courage, covetable.
Like the air, like my blood,
I miss you.
