Taking Care of Yourself is Good Business — 6 Ways to Avoid Burnout
Sometimes self-employed people have the toughest bosses. In theory, you own your time, but often those of us who are self-employed push ourselves hard and have high expectations. That’s good. Entrepreneurship requires dedication, sacrifice, and hard work. But, all work and no play is too great a sacrifice and causes you to risk your health and well-being.
You need to learn to recognize when you need to take breaks, let up and just step away from the challenges and rewards of your business. Not doing so is a recipe for burnout and no one perform well when burnt-out. Burnout is a business risk you can’t afford to take.
Here are some simple suggestions for taking care of yourself and your business and avoiding burnout:-
1. Say No When Appropriate.
Think before you say yes to every (seemingly) great opportunity that comes your way. You can’t stay balanced and do everything. You have to learn how to discern what serves you and what doesn’t. Your time and energy are among your greatest assets. Treat them as such.
2. Take Getaways — even short ones.
You’d be amazed what a day away from the office (and the house) can do for you. Travel to a nearby city for some sightseeing and lunch on a weekday and you’ll be amazed at how much more productive you’ll be when you step back into your business. Take weekends away at least once a quarter. It doesn’t take much and you don’t have to go far or spend a fortune, but it MUST be done.
3. Partake in what relaxes you …
A good novel, a great restaurant or lunch out with nothing to do but stare out the window or look at a magazine. Small indulgences of an hour or two will help you get more done in less time and you’ll feel better in the bargain.
4. Do something physical.
Take a walk. Take a yoga class, ride your bike. Exercise releases hormones that give you energy and make you feel better. You’ll think better — it’s a scientific fact. The break time will increase your productivity and improve your health. Completely win-win.
5. Make sure you’re taking the time to have fun —
even at your busiest, most stressful times and especially in those times. Your mind needs it, and your business deserves it. You’ll be a better you, get more done and be nicer to be around — this matters a lot, especially if you work with other people.
6. Consider treating yourself to a massage on a regular basis or something else that takes away the aches and pains of daily life.
If you don’t have any (yet!) taking care of yourself will make it less likely that you’ll develop physical challenges. If you are experiencing aches and pains, taking care of them will enable you to be more productive and preserve and protect your health, which is truly among your most valuable assets.
The bottom line is: take care of yourself. It’s not cheating, sneaking, or depriving your business. Try it and you’ll find it does your business a world of good. Really. Trust me. Try it; you’ll thank yourself, and your bank account will thank you!
What are you doing to invest more time in taking care of yourself?
