Bon Iver — I Can’t Make You Love Me/Nick of Time

from Calgary (Single) ℗ 2011 4AD

In 2011, Justin Vernon — founder and singer of Bon Iver — was supposed to perform “Calgary” on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon for their self-titled album promo. But Vernon decided to perform his own rendition of “I Can’t Make You Love Me”, a 1991’s smash hit by artist Bonnie Raitt with a mash up with Raitt’s 1989 “Nick of Time”.

“I Can’t Make You Love Me” is actually a very popular song that has been covered by many artists, ranging from Adele’s fast-paced live performance in 2011 iTunes Festival to George Michael soft and warm performance in MTV Unplugged 2006.

But what Bon Iver displayed was one very hauntingly beautiful musical performance ever put on live tv. I can’t even think of another time that a Late Night musical act give me the same chill as this performance did.

The live version on Jimmy Fallon was actually very different from the album version, but you can check out both version and appreciate the way he handle the song.

You can listen the studio version of this performance here, and the Late Night with Jimmy Fallon version here.
