The ForLoopUniGhana Hackathon — APIs For Good

It’s a Hackathon and this time we’re going to Ghana!

The #forLoopUniGhana Hackathon is one of a series of Hackathons — I call them hack parties — happening across Africa. This edition themed “APIs for Good” aims to ingrain the concept of open source software creation, utilization and contribution on the participants.

Participants would be required to work with stated API’s to build awesome applications, softwares and tools. Also, there is the flexibility to utilize any other APIs as required by the hacker.

This Hackathon has little to no limitations and anybody of any skill level can participate, I mean, we will all have teammates, the community and it’s gotta be a hack party!

Event Details

The hackathon event is slated to hold as follows:

• Date: 9th — 10th March, 2018.
• Time: 12pm, 9th — 6pm, 10th.
• Venue: The Library, Computer Science Department, University of Ghana, Accra.

The time looks weird right? Yeah, the Hackathon will be held throughout the night, so hackers, come battle ready, lol.

Participation Criteria

Anybody from the University of Ghana can participate and anybody can build anything. However, here are some guidelines for participating and criteria for winning:

• Application can be web, mobile or desktop and must be web accessible — Can be viewed on the web browser, could be via a simulator.
• Applications will be open-source on Github
• Applications must have a real-world use case.
• Communication will be strictly via Email and Slack.
• Participants must utilize one of the provided APIs

The APIs to be hacked on will be communicated in due time. Please apply to participate here. Applications end by Mon, 5th March 2018.

Prize

As with Hackathon, the prize for final positions are as follows:

• 1st Prize — GHC 600 + Paid Internship with a sponsor company
• 2nd Prize — GHC 300 + Paid Internship with a sponsor company
• 3rd Prize — Paid Internship with a sponsor company

Other benefits include Swags for all attendees and possible individual awards to outstanding participants.

Volunteers

We are a community of awesome people and we probably won’t function without the community. If you are in Ghana and interested in making this Hackathon — sorry, hack party — overly successful, please fill out the form here. Volunteer categories include:

• Coordinate participants and provide technical assistance on the Hackathon day.
• Assist with overall logistics of the event.
• Judge the submissions of participants.
