White noise is incredibly useful for sound design but it only gets you so far. For instance, synthesized cymbals can sound quite bland if you don’t “color” the resulting sound.
Here are 8 different samples, all based on filtered white noise. The kind of filtering you can only do in the frequency domain. Out of the box, they’re just boring 1-second pssshts, but creative use of an amplitude envelope and adding a classic oscillator can do wonders. Sweeping filters are also good.
