Keiichiro Araihara joined Formlabs in November 2016 as the first member of the team in Japan. As the Director of Marketing, Keiichiro focuses on expanding the Formlabs brand in Asia-Pacific by collaborating with vendors in the region. With experience at a wide range of technology companies, Keiichiro brought his marketing expertise to elevate Formlabs’ international profile.
We spoke with Keiichiro about growing Formlabs’ presence in Asia, maintaining a work-life balance, and memorable moments at Formlabs.
What is your favorite part of your role?
I have a lot of fun introducing Formlabs to others and brainstorming new projects with partners. I also love hearing stories of customers’ creations and how they utilize our products, as these conversations open the door to what we can create next.
What is something valuable you’ve learned from working at Formlabs?
I’ve learned to always have the customer in mind, as our product is very customer-focused. Our passion, teamwork, and cutting-edge technology have allowed us to create great products, but the feedback from our consumers and their needs inspire us to continuously improve them. Whenever I’m working on a project or thinking through new ideas, I always think of the customer because they are the driving force behind the success of our products.
What was your favorite project to work on?
My favorite project was WHILL’s Model-C Generative Design Project at the end of 2018 with Autodesk Japan. This project used Autodesk Fusion 360 Generative Design, four Form 2’s, and Castable Wax Resin to design, print, and cast wheelchair frames. It became a fully functioning wheelchair attracting a lot of attention from around the world, and I was very proud to be a part of it.
Are there skills that you’ve improved upon since starting at Formlabs?
As a marketing professional, I feel that my presentation skills have improved. For the last two years, I have had the opportunity to present on behalf of Formlabs at TCT Japan, which is an annual 3D printing and additive manufacturing conference. Through my presentations, I have introduced the Form 2, Form 3, Form 3L, and Fuse printers to many audiences. In addition, I am able to discuss the industries Formlabs occupies and tell others about the company as a whole. Attending this conference has given me the opportunity to improve upon my public speaking, and I am confident in my ability to deliver an engaging message that is also user-oriented.
How do you spend your time outside of work?
I enjoy spending time with my wife and two daughters, and also often barbeque with my friends. My favorite hobbies are biking, golfing, and fishing. Since I work in a digital environment, I like to spend my free time outdoors and with friends and family to keep a good balance.
Can you describe a memorable moment during your time at Formlabs?
I was nominated for and won the “Make Formlabs Better Award” in 2018. When I found out about the nomination, I was honored to be recognized even though I hadn’t been at the company for a long time. It was exciting for my efforts on various challenges to be highlighted, and it gave me a great sense of pride for the projects I had completed.
What’s your favorite 3D print?
I love the 3D data by Mitsuki Nishikawa, who works at CREATIVE BOX, which is the design department of Nissan Motors. He wanted to print the body of a scale car using the Form 2, and using his ideas I was able to shape it easily on PreForm. Nishikawa immediately fell in love with the drawings and detail the Form 2 brought to his model and has continued to use it in his designs.
