Art lovers — we invite you to meet Ham!

Ham started his career as a surrealist just a year ago but has made up for lost time with a bold and fantastic imagination that evokes the creativity that was inside of him.

This marvellous accomplished Malaysian emerging artist is an expert when it comes to merging conflict and removing friction with the elements appearing in his work. His compositions practically capture a magical moment with texture and life, which is a brilliant feat, not to mention for a self-taught artist that has developed his career as a Mechanic Engineer, which is a bit far from the creative industry.

We want FormosArt collectors to get to know Ham better, so we asked Ham 10 revealing questions about his art, his career, and his inspirations. Make sure to check out his NEW sale collection now available on FormosArt Gallery!

1. When did you first realise you wanted to become an artist?

It is ironic to say that, I found my passion in creating arts thanks to this pandemic. The first lockdown in Malaysia was in March of 2020, and one day, I saw one surreal art on the internet — “Plini — The end of everything”. And that got me so hard it’s like love at first sight, and that brought me into the world of surreal arts. On July 14, 2020, I published my very first surreal art, in which most of the elements were mimicking the art that made me who I am today.

2. What inspires your art?

I see a lot of other artists’ crafts. By looking at different artists’ crafts, I can receive many different art styles, and using my little imagination, I will try to incorporate different elements from different styles and come out with my own style. This is why I have a messy gallery, some are bright and have positive vibes, while some are dark and hideous, and some are neutral.

3. Have you earned any awards? What was that experience like?

Being able to join FormosArt and able to share my background with you is by far my proudest achievement! I am really happy and grateful that FormosArt acknowledges my work!

4. What does your creation aim to say?

I hope I can create impactful visuals for audiences to have their own imagination towards my work, like “Where is this place?”, “What would happen if I were there?” or “This looks so real, but it’s impossible right?”

5. What’s the story behind your work “Mind blown”? What inspired this piece/idea?

The main element of this piece is the head statue, which was inspired by the artist — stuz0r. And the light beam was merely my decision at that time. I mean I could choose flowers that come out in the head, or clouds, or rainbows, or trees, etc….In the surreal, everything is possible. The possibilities are limitless. I hope I can corporate as many different elements as possible into my crafts. I believe this is a great challenge for me to try new things, and improve my sense of creativity as well.

6. What’s the story behind your work “Lady in the mirror”? What inspired this piece/idea?

The original image of this is a lady holding a hat. And I saw some surreal art out there, where people were holding a mirror, but the mirror reflects things that it’s not supposed to be. I was inspired by this idea and replaced the hat with a mirror. The flower behind the mirror was also merely my decision at that time. It could be anything, but I thought the lady was surrounded by a field of flowers, so I picked flowers.

7. What do you consider your greatest talent?

Drum, I guess? I’ve been playing drums since I was 7. And I hope my skills in creating art will become better too!

8. What does the NFT market mean to you?

It means a lot to me. It is beyond my imagination that I’m able to put my creation in this marketplace. I hope there are people who can recognise and appreciate my work, and I hope my family will be proud of me because of this, as I come from a traditional Asian family where people haven’t been taught to appreciate and respect creators enough.

9.Which three words best describe you?

Persistence. Kind. Introvert.

10. I consider myself rich when…

I love what I do, live my life, have fun in my work and hobbies, be optimistic, be kind, less complaining, more appreciating, and I believe I will be rich in all different aspects of my life.
