To make a Perfect Formula 1 car you need the best engine, chassis, aerodynamic designs, and tyers. However, along with those fundamental elements, you require another crucial element which is “Fuel” to run F1 cars quickly & swiftly.

In ancient times of Formula 1 motorsport, all F1 cars ran on petrol, and with the progression of technology and increasing impacts of fossil fuels on the environment.

In 1992, the FIA took those impacts into serious consideration and made changes in the rules & regulations of F1 car engines that run on environmentally friendly fuels and since then Unleaded Racing Gasoline fuel has been used by all teams.

Unleaded Racing Gasoline fuel is a formula devised by the FIA that contains different percentages of chemicals that give more performance to the cars in all kinds of weather conditions and this category of F1 blend mix falls in the High Octane Premium Fuel category.

Also, this standard formula of fuel was held mandatory to be followed by all the teams and any team who does not follow this rule will be eliminated from the Grand Prix or penalized heavily.

Current Fuel Market and Plans of FIA

Currently, scientists around the world are searching for alternate green energy sources that will be cheap and readily available to the masses.

However, nowadays we have two or three energy options that are renewable and provide the same efficiency as fossil fuels that are Electric Power, Synthetic Fuel, and Bio-Fuel.

1)- Electric Power:

Electrical Power is obtained through solar panels and then transferred to the batteries installed in cars. It is a clean source of energy that does not harm the environment and is renewable.

Although it is a good energy source it's not cheap and reliable because it limits your traveling distance and also, its charging stations are very limited, and above all, it requires more time to recharge to travel long distances.

All these advantages and disadvantages make electric power less popular due to its limitations and cost.

However, for green energy fans, FIA also introduced Formula E race events in which all F1 cars run on electric-powered engines. You must watch those events they are also, exciting.

2)- Synthetic Fuel or E-fuel:

Synthetic Fuels or E-Fuels are popular fuels nowadays because it is obtained by separating Hydrogen from water, which also requires energy to separate Hydrogen from Oxygen in water, and then combining that hydrogen with captured carbon from the environment which gives the final product called “Synthetic Fuel or E-Fuels”.

This fuel gives the same efficiency as petrol and it can be used instead of petrol by all the vehicles that are running on petrol combustion engines.

However, like Electric power, it is also a renewable source of energy as it is made of the carbon that is in the environment which after being used in a car returns to the atmosphere, which makes it carbon-neutralized Fuel.

But the biggest drawback of this fuel is that it is very costly and cannot be produced on a mass scale due to limited technological resources and even if it can be produced on a mass scale then it would be much more expensive for the public.

However, with the passage of time, this fuel could become less expensive, as cheaper & efficient infrastructure will be built in the future for mass producing this fuel.

Therefore, FIA planned to do a complete shift from Unleaded Racing Gasoline Fuel to Synthetic Fuel.

3)- Bio-Fuel:

Bio-Fuels are the burning topic of today because this kind of fuel is made by using waste materials, Crops, wood, used cooking oils, etc., and like Synthetic fuel they can also provide the same efficiency as petrol & diesel and can be used as a replacement of petrol & diesel.

However, this process is costly and the materials used for making this fuel are less for mass-scale production. Therefore, nowadays, it is used in F1 cars in hybrid configurations with petrol, and this hybrid fuel is called “E10-Fuel” as “E” stands for bio-fuel and “10” stands for the percentage 10% of biofuel used with 90% of petrol blend.

Apart from its usage in F1 cars, it is now used by large corporations like DHL which runs its entire F1 delivery operation from the factory to the circuit on bio-fuels as it took the initiative of making a clean green environment by reducing the carbon emissions as much as it can.

But with the passage of time, this fuel will also become cheap but it would suffice the demands of all the people around the world due to less materials required to make this fuel.

Final Thoughts

It doesn't matter to us fans what fuel they use Synthetic Fuel or Bio-Fuel in F1 cars. what matters to us and all the people around the world is sustainability.

However, we fans of Formula 1 would like to hear the roars of the F1 engine and to see them vanishing from one corner to another on the track at high speed which creates excitement and gives a thrill.

So, if all of these things that make F1 entertaining, will not be affected then it makes all the fans of Formula 1 around the world ecstatic 🤩.
