Stuck On An Island With Eight Songs For Company
Answering this prompt makes for a challenge because sound is vibration and those vibes are an essential element in my life. 86.8 gigs of music is sitting in a backup folder. I’ve bought more in the recent months so that capacity has increased. There are artists and songs, not to mention playlists, I can stay stuck on for hours up to days. So in order to make a fixed list of tunes that would hold me on a deserted island, till my rescue or ultimate demise, I must choose the tracks that either take me to a special place or offers an experience that doesn’t wear.
Bette Midler — Oh Industry
My Aunt would always watch the film ‘Beaches. My favorite scene is when Bette Midler’s character lands the lead role in a musical and performs an excerpt of ‘Oh Industry’ — Of course the entire track was only available on CD, and I’d have it on repeat constantly, which remains true into today.
Culture — Two Sevens Clash
My cousin Jay let me borrow a Reggae compilation CD and I’d bump it on the freeway commuting to work. Culture’s ‘Two Sevens Clash’ caught my ears. Now anytime I play it I’m taken back to those mornings and it feels good.
Ellie Goulding — Lights
I heard Ellie Goulding’s ‘Lights’ back when it was first released. I was working a maintenance shift at Dodger Stadium and this track appeared on Pandora. It linked strongly to my memory.
Darude — Sandstorm
‘Sandstorm’ by Darude is not only a trance classic I can listen to sober but it’s a number I got to hear the first time I rolled on ecstasy. Though aside from that sentiment I’d be crushed if I couldn’t hear this whenever I’d like.
Snap! — Rhythm Is A Dancer
Before EDM was as big as it is now it would be rare to hear something like it on the radio. After hearing this I was hooked. You can say ‘Rhythm Is A Dancer’ turned me into a fan of electric music and made me want to rave. Had I been old enough in the 90’s to hit a warehouse gig I would’ve without any apprehension.
Dimmu Borgir — Unorthodox Manifesto
I actually chose this song by Norwegian black metal band Dimmu Borgir because I really like the final bridge. Its also over 8 minutes long, lol.
Cradle Of Filth — Presents From The Poison Hearted
‘Presents From The Poison Hearted’ is one of my all time favorite songs off Cradle Of Filth’s album Damnation And A Day. The solo riff before the climax pumps me up!
Everything But The Girl — Missing
Much like ‘Sandstorm’ and ‘Presents From the Poison Hearted’, I would be driven mad if I couldn’t hear ‘Missing’ by ‘Everything But The Girl’ whenever I wanted. It’s just one of those scores I’d never abandon.
