Forum. /noun: A meeting or medium where ideas and views on a particular issue can be exchanged.

Build a potent European Fourth Estate

Once the gatekeepers between citizens and political powers, news organisations worked to fulfil the promise to keep populations informed and engaged. They are also aiming to foster a greater understanding of the stakes at play. That came to a stop when platforms (Google, Facebook, Twitter, Apple, etc.) came into the mix.

The rise of platforms gave way to more fragmented audiences, and a greater control and direct reach for them, circumventing the efforts of news organisations to build a meaningful relationship with their readers. The results? A wide access to diverse sources of information, yes, but more ominously an equal exposure to misinformation and a battle that journalism is losing for readers’ attention, and worryingly for an increasing number of countries, the public’s trust.

It is crucial for our countries and citizens to have a strong independent press, self-reliant and safe from commercial and political pressures. The shifting news landscape has lead to unprecedented technological, legal and cultural threats to press freedom. This shift has left publishers and newsrooms disempowered, looking for ways to sustain their work. The business models that once funded news are challenged, directly affecting and weakening professional journalism, leaving news media more vulnerable than ever before.

Fulfilling the yet-to-be-tackled ideal of a unified European Fourth Estate is now paramount, especially in light of increasing political cooperation among European countries in the past 20–30 years, which publishers did not emulate and adapt for the news industry.

Presenting the most relevant European articles from leading publications throughout the continent every day is at the core of Forum’s mission. Leading regional editorial teams to select these articles is also within this mission, to ensure a fully balanced representation of pertinent issues. So European citizens can better understand, engage with and discuss the developments in the life of the continent with fellow citizens. Going further, Forum offers translations of these articles into all European languages.

Create the European Public

An ever-expanding frustration coming from the lack of a common sphere in Europe accommodating all the different voices of the continent, treating on European topics and issues, fuelled the creation of Forum. Devising an effective resource where European citizens can find news they can trust about Europe, high quality journalism that helps them come to their own conclusions, and articles holding political powers accountable.

Forum provides the framework to find the news that will challenge, inspire, inform and engage European citizens, giving them the opportunity to voice their opinions in focused conversations, and upholding free speech on the platform. Forum is powered by the ideal that the health of our democracy is contingent on the health of journalism combined with the reach to its citizens, going further with its mission to bridge the gap between the European public and European news.
