I often get asked “what should I put in a Time Capsule”

The Tricky Business of What Makes You, You

Most of the time people want to know to help a friend or relative get into building theirs… without having to get too involved.

And here’s my take on this…

Fill your Time Capsule with whatever makes you, you

But, if you want to be less heavy….a great “starter pack” for Time Capsules… which can allow you to leave a legacy of you — enough to give a sense of you, and not too much to be a gargantuan hassle would include:

1) Your vital documents

2) 5–10 photos of you at various ages

3) A couple of short home videos

4) Your family history — letters? Tree? A book? (everyone has something)

5) Your certificates — (Education, awards)

That’s it.

Pretty simple right?

These 5 items can make up almost any Time Capsule and will do just fine for small to medium sized projects.

It’s great, especially for a beginner to try this list.

Now, if you’re creative, or are making a life series of multiple capsules or a family collection of Time Capsules and want to make more of a project of this… you’re going to want a better list than this.

Some more interesting items you might add are:

1) Your favorite stories (written or captured in a NotForgotten® Video)

2) A message to the future (written or captured in a NotForgotten® Video)

3) Your Social media pages

4) Your art — books, photos

5) Your hobby work — digitized eg your cookbook

6) Newspapers from the day you were born

7) Saved voicemails

These things would give you a much better Time Capsule, offering a much richer story… and give your descendants or future-self a far better flavor of who you really were.

Of course there is one major downside.

And that’s a fact that this takes more time. A scarce thing for most of us.

The other question I also get asked a lot is

How much can fit in a Time Capsule? My answer: 2 GB is plenty!

It’s takes some planning …. but you can fit a lot into 2GB of space. (Note: This question is where 300 year time capsules comes in. They give you the option of making a NotForgotten Video as well as 2GB space)

Now even better are Time Capsules containing stories which are filmed by a videographer (including 2GB of space for documents!)

I’ve got a lot of good feedback from folks about how using the NotForgotten videographer team has helped them finally tell their story in a way they can be proud of.

Bottom line…Film a stunning NotForgotten Video telling your story — in your words — or let your personal photos, videos and documents that really matter to you be your story. Whether it’s the little lessons, the secret to happiness, your wedding video or your family history book, keep your story alive in a NotForgotten Time Capsule

Hope it helps!
