It was a sunny day in September, sometime around the 27th (really who’s keeping count?). I was watching Naruto Shippuden when a Google Form was released in the class group. A group that was mostly dead except for when there was homework and assignment answers to be discussed was now buzzing (That nagging sound that sounds when a lot of WhatsApp messages come back to back. And I turned my GoodKnight on thinking mosquitoes, smh) with hundreds of chats. So I did what any curious person does nowadays “ Eda ivide entha sambhavikunne?” (English translation: “Eda what’s happening? inserts eyes emoji). And for the first time in my life, I heard “Cloud”.

Honestly, if you don’t know a thing about Cloud Technology then you are in the same boat which I once was in. In today’s world, not a lot of people know what anything is. And when we google what we want to know we come across millions of articles that have things written down in very complicated ways. So, let me tell you what cloud is.

In this world of online classes and talking to people through social media and messaging platforms like Instagram, WhatsApp and Facebook (I was as surprised as you were when I heard people still use this, No offence Zuckerberg) haven't we all come across scenarios where we wanted to give someone something particular like a hard drive filled with photos and we had no way to do so? Of course, we could email them the photos one by one or, upload them into a drive and send them the link. So which one would you choose? Yess! It would be the second option. Why go through the hassle of having to upload each photo one by one and send them to another person when you could take say Google Drive, for example, upload your photos there and then share a link that provides them access to the photos right? Well, you see what I did there(proud smiles)? This is an example of Cloud Technology!

In the case that we took above as an example, we wanted to store the data that we wanted (our photos) in a hard drive that was accessible to another person who was not physically present next to us. That is, we connected another person (the end-user) with data that was stored at a remote location not physically accessible to them via the internet. This is what Cloud Technology does. Cloud Computing technology gives users access to storage, files, software, and servers through their internet-connected devices: computers, smartphones, tablets, and wearables. (Source: Salesforce)

Why is Cloud Technology gaining fast and wide acceptance? Well, the answer to that is simple as well. Resources are crucial for any business. And as companies grow larger the need for resources grows with them. They’ll need more laptops, more computers, hard drives etc… for keeping up with their ever-growing needs. This is where Cloud Computing comes in.

Scalability

Cloud provides individuals, small scale and large scale businesses and enterprises with the opportunity to make use of their hard drives, computers, machines etc… depending on their needs with a payment. This means that they can decide on how much resources they need to use depending upon their business and scale their requirements down or up accordingly. In this way, their supply meets their demand.

Time-Saving

Going cloud means saving time. If you have tried to set up a computer from scratch you know that that is a ton of work and time. You have to set the motherboard up, you have to connect the wires right and so on. Why waste time doing this when Cloud just does it for you? You heard that right! Cloud does the dirty work for you. So all you have to do is sit back, relax and enjoy the extra time that you have at hand.

Fast Recovery

If you have deleted data such as pictures, videos or documents from your device you know how much of a hassle it is to recover them back. But with Cloud Computing, you don’t have to worry about that. There is always redundant data lying around so that your data/server never goes down.

Wanna know more about Cloud Computing? Excited to experience it first hand? Then there are a lot of resources that you may explore like, Google Cloud Platform, Amazon Web Services(AWS), Microsoft Azure and much more. So what are you waiting for? Explore, Learn, Conquer.
