I really didn’t want to write this week’s Medium post. Normally, I get a rush looking through notebooks and scouring the internet for something to spark a new story, but this week I didn’t have that luxury. From the moment I checked my phone Monday morning, my attention was dominated by a disturbing event in the news: A racist attack on the University of Kentucky Campus. If you haven’t seen the video or come across the hundreds of articles covering the story, I’ll give you a brief rundown.

During the early morning hours of Sunday, November 6, 2022 freshman student Kylah Spring was working her job at the reception desk of the Boyd Hall dormitory. Around 1:00 AM a 22-year-old woman (later identified as senior Sophia Rosing) entered the building. Rosing was drunk and didn’t have a key card. Concerned and following protocol—which required Spring to report any unwell student to the resident assistant on duty—she asked Rosing if she was okay. This simple question sparked a ten-minute tirade in which Rosing kicked, punched, and bit Spring and a friend of hers who attempted to help.
