Daunte Wright, Racism, and America.

Racism is ingrained in this land!

Daunte Wright and George Floyd are some of the black Americans killed by police officers these years.

On April 11, 2021, Daunte Wright, a 20-year-old Black man, was fatally shot by police officer Kimberly Potter during a traffic stop in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, United States.

He was stopped by police on Sunday — about 10 miles from where George Floyd died during an arrest in Minneapolis last year — then got back into his car and drove away before it crashed, and Daunte Wright died at the scene.

The shooting sparked protests in Brooklyn Center and renewed ongoing demonstrations against police brutality in the Minneapolis–Saint Paul metropolitan area, leading to citywide and regional curfews. Demonstrations also spread to cities across the United States.

Daunte Wright and George Floyd are some of the black Americans killed by police officers these years. U.S. police have killed at least 1,033 people in 2021 — over 25% were Black people. Only 1.7% of police killings ever lead to charges. Justice for him would mean that he was still here to raise his child.

The question is that when will this racism and police brutality end?!

Today, what matters to us is not to forget him and the countless other Black lives that have been so needlessly taken from us.

What we must do is to continue to demand accountability, and take action against these tragic injustices. As Martin Luther King said: “Our lives begin to end the day we remain silent about the things that matter.” So let’s fight to achieve our rights.

To conclude, I would like to say that today as we remember the life of Daunte Wright we are reminded that the fight for justice, equal protection under the law, and accountability is far from over.
