March 10th marks Harriet Tubman Day, a day to celebrate and honor the life and legacy of the anti-slavery activist who fought tirelessly to free slaves through the Underground Railroad. Though observed locally around the U.S. state of Maryland, there are growing calls for this day to also be recognized at the federal level. In this article, we will explore the history of Harriet Tubman Day and reflect on Tubman’s fight against slavery.

Born into slavery in Maryland, Harriet Tubman escaped to freedom in 1849 and then returned to the South to help others escape through the Underground Railroad, a secret network of safe houses and routes. She made a total of 13 missions and helped around 70 slaves escape to freedom, earning her the nickname “Moses” among those she helped. During the Civil War, Tubman also served as a nurse, cook, and spy for the Union Army.

Tubman’s bravery and determination were truly remarkable, especially considering the barriers she faced as a black woman in the 19th century. She risked her life to fight for the freedom and equality of others, and her contributions to the abolitionist movement are immeasurable.

Today, we honor and celebrate her legacy, not just on Harriet Tubman Day, but every day. Her life and work continue to inspire people around the world, particularly African Americans, who see her as a symbol of strength, resilience, and hope.

As we reflect on Harriet Tubman’s fight against slavery, we are reminded that there is still work to be done in the fight for racial justice and equality. We must continue to honor her legacy by working towards a world that is free from racism, discrimination, and oppression.

In conclusion, Harriet Tubman Day is a reminder of the heroic actions of one woman and the collective efforts of those who fought against slavery. On this day, let us honor and celebrate the legacy of Harriet Tubman and continue the fight for a better future.
