“Nothing valuable comes fast”.

Love this.

From Gary’s extremely professionally done daily vlog on youtube, DailyVee, episode 020. It happened to be during a conversation with James Altucher for his podcast so you could also catch the full conversation there, The James Altucher Show. See this post on Medium for links out (link in bio/FB).

During the conversation, James remarked how it seems like there is a direct path Gary follows: learn, create great content, create a community around that content, and then have calls to action for people to buy. Gary spent 10 years learning this. He did it with his first business, Wine Library, and then again as GaryVee on social media and his books to become a bestselling author.

James asked “so how would someone speed up this process” and Gary’s answer was simple; “nothing valuable comes fast”.

I think that’s absolutely true. A strong brand is one of the best assets you can have; it could allow you to charge a premium in the marketplace for whatever product or service you sell, it can be a magnet for opportunities, you name it. A brand is built on trust, which needs to be earned, and that requires time. As the old saying goes, “easy come, easy go”.

I look at all my heroes that I can think of and none of them came to be where they are quick. A big part of the reason why they’re my heroes is because they’ve put in the work. Some I only discovered 10 years after their start, and the 10 years is the precise thing that is impressive. Things just take time, you’ve got to earn it. The problem is I think people have become so impatient, myself absolutely included.

I think there is an upside to this message, though, which is that if you want to build something valuable then you just need to put in the time — consistently. This is tried and true. You want to have a popular blog? I do. Then put in the time. Show up every day. Create value, and earn the privilege of people’s attention. Everyone has an opinion, and it’s never been easier to broadcast it to the world on social media. If you want yours to mean something then you have to put in the work.
